court shots

This series came to life in Key West in 2021. A landscaping job led me to a property with a seafoam green basketball court walled in by palm trees, and I couldn't leave without photographing it. That one shot turned into a habit.

Now I look twice at every basketball court I pass, wherever I am. From Iceland, to LA, to Brazil, there’s something so unique about the way each place designs their basketball courts. Each place designs its courts differently, and the surroundings say as much about a place as any landmark does. Variations in details like a rusted hoop against graffiti, a court hemmed in by palm trees, or a backboard standing alone in the desert with nothing around it for miles all show a destination’s different take on courts.

Basketball courts are a strange kind of common ground, a shared, ordinary space that every place still makes its own. As I add to this collection one court at a time, the contrast between sameness of purpose and total difference in character is what this series is really about.
